Currently going through the book "Composition: From Snapshots to Great Shots" by Laurie ExcellJessi Berryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11515746074030542633noreply@blogger.comBlogger95125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6096960033214709050.post-91810478119486659102013-09-30T21:50:00.003-07:002013-09-30T21:50:28.075-07:00Aperture - Part 1<div style="text-align: justify;">
Assignment: Find a scene with foreground, middle-ground and background. Set up the tripod, focus half-way into the scene, keep ISO relatively low. Set to aperture priority, cycle through aperture settings letting shutter speed fall where it may. Review differences in depth of field.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

I used the table tripod set up outside, focusing on a skull decoration in a round-about outside the front of our house. It was midday and hot, but little man was happy to run around for a little bit! Also, the size ratio was set to 1:1 for a previous image and I forgot to change that... oh well... :)</div>

I started this activity with a scenery picture: a cactus at the horizon, a blue sky in the background and mostly dirt with some bushes at the foreground. Really, it did not lend itself well to the aperture changes. But this image was fun to look at the different depths of field. Honestly I think I like the aperture at about 5.6-ish for this image because of the cactus skeleton. I like seeing it mostly clear with the blurred tree, but also having the rocks slightly blurred as well. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I've never actually sat back and looked at the different aperture settings before. I usually keep it at the lowest setting available for the lens length. I know at the longest focal length with the Samsung lens I can go 5.6 for the lowest aperture (I am unable to control the aperture with the Cannon lens.</div>

Find a subject to photograph indoors without a flash and set your camera on a tripod. Set lens to f8 or f5.6 in aperture priority and cycle through the ISO settings from lowest (in my case 200) to highest (in my case 6400). What is your comfort level with how high you can go?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I had a hard time finding something interesting in the house worthy of photographing. I did two cycles, one of the carseat and the other of our shoes. During the day I tend to open window blinds to allow in light. I don't feel like I am living in a cave. Though, sometimes the heat is pretty high.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So here are the shoes. :) Much more interesting than the car seat I think. And I needed to run through these quickly as it was during nap time.</div>

I wouldn't mind going up to 800 in the house (that was where the automatic setting took the image at), but that is pushing it. Preferably I wouldn't want to go higher than 400. Though I am impressed with the image quality on my camera at the higher settings. It maybe different at night though with no natural light, though who wants to take images with no natural light? That is not preferential. Natural lighting is the best, and with a flash everything is different... </div>
<br />
I played with post production of the ISO 6400 image...<br />

I have read so much about the Exposure Triangle on so many different websites. Now that I have had a camera to change settings and actually play, I haven't really done a whole lot, just read.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Here are a few articles that I have found helpful...</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://digital-photography-school.com/" target="_blank">Digital Photography School</a> website and the article <a href="http://digital-photography-school.com/learning-exposure-in-digital-photography" target="_blank">The Exposure Triangle</a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/" target="_blank">Cambridge in Color</a> website and their <a href="http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/camera-exposure.htm" target="_blank">tutorial on Exposure</a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://photo.tutsplus.com/" target="_blank">Photo Tuts+</a> and their <a href="http://photo.tutsplus.com/tutorials/photography-fundamentals/the-ultimate-beginners-introduction-to-exposure/" target="_blank">Ultimate Beginner's Introduction to Exposure</a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
One thing I have a hard time with is what shutter speed best goes with what aperture. Of course this is thinking that there is a 'right' one, and really I know there is not. I guess that I need to get that into my head, it depends on the emotion the image is meant to invoke. But for the best exposure, those numbers confuse me...</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Here are my current thoughts on the three elements of the Exposure Triangle...</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<ul>
<li><div style="text-align: justify;">
ISO - I know I don't like that grainy look. I feel like it is error on my part.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;">Aperture - I really like that shallow depth of field, I like the background/foreground being blurred a little bit. I think it feels more like 'through the eye' that way. It helps that the smaller the aperture (larger the opening) the more light comes through. the more light, the lower the ISO...</li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;">Shutter Speed - I always try to get as fast a shutter speed as I can. I want good pictures of my kids. I guess at times I will have to sacrifice graininess for a clearer image (not as motion-blurred). It helps that the aperture I like is the kind that lets the largest amount of light in. :)</li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>

<br />
I, again, focused on the cactus in this shot and kept it aligned with the right thirds line. It was a lot of fun walking through the desert!<br />
<br />
I find it fascinating, like the mountains with the last lens, the house in this one appears closer to the cactus at the longest focal length, and then the distance grows when going down to the widest focal length. You can tell the distance I am from the cactus because of the post that marks our property line... I wish the clouds were a little less prevalent at this time (although it was wonderful outside), I wanted to see the mountains change with the closer I moved to the cactus.<br />
<br />
In my head I picture the angle of view with the vertex at the lens. This is what I see when thinking about the mm numbers... I thought I would share this as it feels like a photography epiphany for me. :)<br />
<br />
I am liking the cannon lens less and less, I need a tripod (one that is taller than the table one)... :)<br />
<br />
now... on to chapter two. :)</div>

I think it is interesting how the mountain is more in view and noticeable at 50mm instead of 20mm. yet the angle of the closer cactus makes you feel smaller in the 20mm.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The angle appears to go from a straight head-on with the 50mm to ... I don't know how to explain the angle of the 20mm... It's all through the front cactus and mountains. the perspective changes...</div>

Compare the focal lengths from a specific distance to see the coverage the lens gives you.</div>

I, again, did not pull out the tripod but perhaps should have. I actually rested the camera on the hood of the truck (which means I had a hard time seeing to focus). I started out focusing on the tree and ended up focusing on the cactus behind it...</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
It's amazing the difference between the widest angle and longest focal length with this lens. It made it very difficult to focus on the tree in the 80mm I cannot tell what the aperture was, as it does not read it through the camera. But the exposure value seemed to increase each time I lengthen the focal length because the shutter speed slowed down. I find this interesting and wonder why it did this. Perhaps I may learn this later, I might even forget.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I think I prefer the widest angle on this lens, it is easier to shoot and easier to focus. The whole image does not seem to shift like it does with my other lens, it seems fairly centered.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This was fun and I am excited to get outside and try the second part to the first chapter.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I just went outside to take some shots, and this was a little difficult as I was also trying to keep an eye on little man at the same time with baby girl asleep in the house in her swing. So once I took these shots, I had to run to the back door to check on her! Fun, fun</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
To be honest I am not really sure how to compare these images. I prefer being closer to the subject (in this case a cluster of Saguaro cacti) and I feel I should have started either closer to them from the widest angle (20mm) or work backward from the longest focal length (50mm).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I find it interesting that at 35mm the shutter speed dropped by half. I did not think that focal length played a role in that, as the pyramid is ISO, Aperature and Shutter Speed. But, the exposure is brighter than the other two images because of the longer shutter speed...</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I do like how the 20mm gives more option of background and foreground in the frame. the 35mm just seems cramped in and cropped versus the 50mm appears to be on purpose. Perhaps it is the tailgate of the truck that caused that and I should have been more cautious of the subject. But since this was strictly a focal length exercise, that was my main priority.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I also find it interesting that the saguaro cluster appears more in the center at 50mm and slightly to the right at 20mm. It seems that the entire plane shifts just slightly to the left the longer the focal length.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I'm really excited about the clouds. Hurrah for cloudy days in the desert! :)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Next will be this same exercise using the Cannon lens... </div>

I have 1 battery, several memory cards but never have needed more than 1. We also bought a table top tripod a while back.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I like that I can use other camera lenses with my camera but there is one problem, they only function on manual. I have not gotten too good at focusing manually quickly. I cannot change the aperture with the canon lens. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I would love to have a telephoto zoom lens (and a decent tripod). I think that would be incredible and would have been nice when we found the owl in the cactus on our property. But we still got an ok shot of the owl (meaning you were able to make out that it was an owl. :) </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I would also like a wider aperture, wide angle and fish eye. I think it would be fun to experiment with those. It is amazing how pricey lenses are, not to mention the cameras themselves! But an actual DSLR would be nice to get eventually but not practical unless you are a photographer because of the price. But who knows? My opinion may change. :)</div>

Ok, so I picked up this book from the library. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Composition-From-Snapshots-Great-Shots/dp/0321741323" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61431T0ZkmL.jpg" width="262" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I want to improve my photography. I have wanted to do that for years. The summer before I started high school I remember walking through an Office Depot looking for desks. There was this awesome corner desk. It was huge, with frosted glass tabletops and brushed nickel accents. I loved it. My mom told me she could see me behind a desk like that when I was older. I imagined a desk like that for a photography business. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Fast forward 4-5 years and I tried to take an ART class at the community college. I did poorly because I did not produce work that the teacher liked (I can not draw). She asked me how I planned to make a career in art if I couldn't draw. I told her I wanted to go into photography but I needed to take that entry level ART course in order to take it. The photography classes were not just for digital but for film as well. The teacher just scoffed at me, rolled her eyes and walked away. Yeah, way to make me feel confident!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The second time I tried to take the ART class I came down with pneumonia. The only classes I managed to finish were more necessary classes for my transfer to a university for a teaching degree. Needless to say, I didn't finish that ART class and didn't get into photography classes.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now that I have finished college, had a couple kids, worked through feeling entirely discouraged because of a camera that did not have the functions I wanted, then feeling like I just couldn't do a decent job taking pictures, I have decided to give it another try.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
That's where the book comes in. I managed to read through the first chapter yesterday and feel fairly motivated to work through the assignments at the end of the chapters in hopes that it helps to improve my photography skills. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I hope to document this here to show growth and improvement, or at the very least to help keep me accountable. I know with the newborn and a toddler that it is going to be difficult to keep it going and all I am doing is adding one more thing to my already full plate of tasks and projects.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Hubby laughed when he saw the book. "My wife wants to be a photographer", he said. I looked at his joking face and seriously replied, "since as long as I can think back I have wanted to be one". I know that being a professional photographer isn't going to happen, but if I can feel good about the pictures I take then at least that is something...</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So here is for round two of making this attempt through the 10 chapters of this book. My goal is to go through <strike>a chapter a week</strike> what I can when I can. I think that sounds decent enough... We will see how long I can check out this book for.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Happy Picture Taking. :)</div>

... and in with the new... </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I will say that I hate feeling like a quitter. And I am not a quitter. Sometimes it may take me a while to complete a task, but I will eventually get it done.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
For example: I have this blanket I have been crocheting now for the last... mmm... 6 years or more. I think it is one of those continual, never-ending projects that I have. The blanket is HUGE. I mean, humongous! It will probably be able to fit a family of 4 by the time I am done with it. I am nearly complete, a little more than half way. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But that said and having provided a little background on myself, I will say that I am not giving this project up. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It will be hard completing the daily task, with working as a teacher during the morning and being a mommy 24/7, but I am going to do my darnedest to do this.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I am excited! I got a new camera! It is a Samsung NX100. It is one of those new compact systems cameras (CSC), or as DPS seems to enjoy calling it, a mirror-less interchangeable lens camera (MILC). It is like a DSLR but with the compactness of those smaller digital point-and-shoots! I love it! I just cannot wait to be able to build up knowledge on the functions, and maybe be able to get other lenses (like wide-angle, fish-eye, macro). It is SO exciting! It has an adapter so that I can use Cannon EOS lenses with it! I hope to one day get that! How awesome that would be! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Anyhow, I am going to be doing research when I can to find some themes for the weeks of 2012. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Hope you all have had a wonderful year! I am excited to find out what 2012 has to offer! 2011 made me busy with a baby, a special education teaching position in a great district, and whatever else life decided to throw at me. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Until next time, take care and enjoy these last few days!</div>Jessi Berryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11515746074030542633noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6096960033214709050.post-25215980348517640192011-09-07T11:00:00.000-07:002011-09-07T11:00:04.998-07:00Slacker!!<div style="text-align: justify;">
I wish I could say it is for good reason! But I cannot. I have no good excuses for my not taking pictures. I hate the fact that I started this project and did not continue it. But I can jump back in, I think...</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
After our trip to Heber, AZ, I lost my camera. Well, not so much lost as misplaced. I felt horrible, my camera was missing! I don't have any other options for taking pictures except for my phone, and that just doesn't take good pictures. I found it a while later, and guess where it was? In the bottom, and I mean very bottom, of the diaper bag. I thought I had removed everything out of that bag, but apparently not. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The hardest part of missing my camera was all the shots I lost out on taking of my son. That made the camera missing very hard. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I think taking pictures is harder because Nikolai is more mobile now. Before, I would set him down on the floor and take some pictures of something and he would still be where I put him on the floor. But now he crawls, moves and gets into EVERYTHING! SO I have the short amount of time during his naps to take a picture, if even that! So I am using his nap time now to write and say how much a horrible person I am to not have taken pictures this last month. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I am still discouraged with limited capabilities of my camera; and the fact that after all the pictures I have taken, I do not feel I have gotten better, but instead worse. I am running out of things in this house to capture in still, and have it be interesting. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Until the next photo, I will be sadly looking through my viewfinder. And just that, probably just looking...</div>

Like the monsoon storm we had last night and into the morning. Too bad I didn't get a picture of the rain. It's amazing how often we use it, how much we need it, and we don't entirely realize it. Like a friend of mine got off work early yesterday because the doctor's office she works at (she is a phlebotomist) did not have water. The office stayed open, but she deals with bodily fluid samples. Um, a doctor's office not having water? Can I say ew?<br />
<br />
Day 106<br />
<br />
I was washing my hands and thought, "oh! water, I could use this for my project!"... Not exactly ony of my brightest moments, but it was in the early morning and I was tired from lack of sleep...<br />
<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">Poor Byron's ears (my son's stuffed bunny). They are perfect for chewing, but that also means that they get nasty really quick! My quilt... At this point in time, it is ready to start being pieced together! I started that on Saturday, but got a before picture...<br />

"Time to Sew"<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">I love the rain. It started when I was feeding Nikolai, which of course, the thunder distracted him. So we decided to go outside and watch the rain. Nikolai was more interested in the cars passing by. It was nice and relaxing for the two of us.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

"Mommy's Time to Play"<br />
<br />
I am so stoked! I saved up some birthday and Christmas money and bought myself a cricut! I was going to get the smaller one (they have 'em at Big Lots), but Brandon said to wait because I wanted the expressions one. So, now I have it! Granted, I only have the two cartridges it comes with, but that is ok, the school year is starting soon! :)</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

<br />
I tried not to use the flash, so it was a little difficult. I like the shadows created by the crib from the sconce light being on (it isn't a very bright light). I thought it would be cool in B&W but the picture was just to dark. So when I was editing, there is this option to decolor. It gets it closer to B&W without loosing the integrity of the image. pretty cool...<br />
<br />
I just love how he sleeps on his tummy with his butt in the air. I think it is too funny. :)<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">...for the cat that is... Well, technically not yet. She waited for me to put Nikolai down for the night and what does she do but meow her little head off! She should know better, after all these years that I have had her and she still thinks she will get food when she still has some in her bowl. But she was cute, sitting so well (that's right, she 'sits' for her food), then she started sniffing the container we keep her food in. It was so cute and I had yet to take a picture for the day. I had to...</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

I am not so sure about this theme. I cannot leave the shutter open on the camera, though tracking the sun would be so cool to do! Or the road in front of our house... </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">So this is the clock in the kitchen. It doesn't keep time; the second hand just jumps, sometimes to a new position, but mostly just in place. I tried to keep the motion of the second hand, but without the blur of everything else. So I turned on the S-flash (suppressed? I am not sure), because it has a tendency to capture movement when indoors or in lower light situations. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

<br />
We (Victoria, Jena, Nikolai and I) went swimming while Brandon and the boys played airsoft. Once Victoria and Jena got out of the pool, we continued splashing causing me to get a bug bite from this flying ant looking thing (OUCH!). So, I figured to get a picture of ants. Now these aren't the type that bit me, no they are black and much smaller. But ants rain down on any picnic, and picnics are fun during the summer!</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">I think this turned out pretty cool... I partially covered the flash to prevent a bright, over exposed rock. And I used macro. I just think Macro makes my camera take better photos! But, I must have gotten the distance just right to create the blur of the rock in the background!</div><br />

<br />
Here is our friend's swimming pool! Gotta love reflections and nice clear water! :)<br />

So I took a few of the horizon with clouds, took some of the weather vane that is outside. I don't think I have ever seen it actually point in the direction of the wind. But then, I don't think I have ever actually looked at it when it is windy. Then I took a pitcture of this, this is the second one...</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: justify;">I think the way the clouds spiral out from the sun looks pretty cool! And when in the bathtub, what fun is there without the use of toys that stick to the walls? Letter and numbers are fun to use and spell things with! Here is my inspiration for the song I started singing today. I hope it helps Nikolai learn to spell his name when he gets older! :)</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

I am not sure. Hawaii's was pretty, but I am glad to live in a place that has colorful, beautiful sunsets.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhx98CKMQMEcWVViWjwW9WjnRubcAn3P_BYHD9ZMdPhanY7qFoU8wPfdeEZkDmxdDbOcJOnA2EVfDjjg6qWeabCWRECgrzv2RlEJN6kP07ykt3b2vnxllF1fwBtIzZUT8XuqeAeuPZHr8I/s1600/0004+-+sunset.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhx98CKMQMEcWVViWjwW9WjnRubcAn3P_BYHD9ZMdPhanY7qFoU8wPfdeEZkDmxdDbOcJOnA2EVfDjjg6qWeabCWRECgrzv2RlEJN6kP07ykt3b2vnxllF1fwBtIzZUT8XuqeAeuPZHr8I/s320/0004+-+sunset.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>Jessi Berryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11515746074030542633noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6096960033214709050.post-52288326044598686122011-07-19T10:12:00.000-07:002011-07-19T10:12:33.353-07:00Week 14: Summer - Day 92<div style="text-align: justify;"></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Wow, yeah is it summer time in Tucson! "summer time and the livin's easy"...</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">I was going to take a picture of the pool from next door. We spent some time there yesterday in their air conditioned house. But, I was watching our niece and nephew for a few hours. It was cooler there, a/c is much better than a swamp cooler, especially when monsoons are here. You can feel the thickness. But, they are 6 and almost 3 years. No time to take a picture...<br />
<br />
Then I thought, oh a monsoon storm would be so cool to capture, that is a surefire sign of summer in Tucson! Besides, we love the rain here! Well, we got home (Brandon, Nikolai and I) and I started getting carried away with dishes and preparing for dinner (I had to go to the store). </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">So instead, I took a picture of our thermostat. What you see is right, we moved the temp way down to 50! But with a swamp cooler, you cannot control the temp; you get what you get. We just leave it on in hopes it will get down to 70, especially when the rains come!</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
